Block of the Month

Block of the month is a fun and easy way to learn a new block each month, win lots of blocks to make a quilt top or even make a block to donate to the Community Outreach quilt projects!

Click here for Block of the Month information and rules.

August's Block of the Month is
"Friendship Star"

august

This month we're dedicating our blocks to the Sew for the Cure. Help us increase breast cancer awareness with this wonderful Friendship Star block.

If you picked up your special background fabric at the July meeting, you'll use your own pink fabric to complete this block. Please remember to bring your finished blocks to donate at the August guild meeting.

We'll have special Sew-Days coming up to assemble the blocks into quilt tops which will be given to breast cancer fighters and survivors that guild members nominate to receive a quilt.

Community Outreach

Quilt kits for the Community Outreach quilts are available for you to take home and put together. Pick one up at the next Guild meeting you attend. We had such a great time and we hope you'll join us on our next Sew Day.

Our next Sew Days will be

Friday, July 25 from 10am to 2pm
at the Longmont Public Library,

and August 16 from 10am to 2pm
at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Bring your sewing machine, notions and supplies and join us! We'll be cutting kits for our Community Outreach quilts that we donate to the Longmont Police Department, and we'll be putting some quilts together.
We'd love to see you there.

Upcoming sewing dates will be posted in this section regularly. If you would like to come and sew with us, we welcome you! We also have projects you can take home and finish if you prefer to sew at home or just can't join us on our sewing dates.

Click here more information on the Community Outreach projects, or contact Community Outreach Committee Chair Janet Mason at janetmason@longmontquiltguild.org.

Summer Mystery Quilt: "Dots and Dashes"

This is a fun, easy four-part mystery quilt that anyone can enjoy for summer!

The finished quilt size is 37 1/2" square without the borders, so you may want to buy extra fabric to add a border or two to increase the size to a lap quilt.

Part Two: Cutting
Here's a hint: It's helpful to label each stack of patches with it's letter and store them flat in a box!

From Fabric One (Background) Cut:
Patch A: 52 Squares cut 3 1/2" by 3 1/2"
Patch B: 12 Squares cut 2" by 2"
Patch C: 24 Squares cut 3 7/8" by 3 7/8" - then cut these squares once diagonally to yield 48 triangles.

From Fabric Two (Dark) Cut:
Patch D: 52 Rectangles cut 2" by 3 1/2"

From Fabric Three (Focus) Cut:
Patch E: 24 Squares cut 3 7/8" by 3 7/8" - then cut these squares once diagonally to yield 48 triangles.

From Fabric Four (Medium Light Accent) Cut:
Patch F: 48 Squares cut 2" by 2"

From Fabric Five (Medium Dark Accent) Cut:
Patch G: 61 Squares cut 2" by 2"

fabric

Next, Step 3: Making Triangle Squares
Take 48 each of patches C and E and make 3 1/2" triangle squares (sew the triangles right sides together along the diagonal edge). Press to focus fabric (patch E).

Now, Step 4Now, Step 4: Making Accent Pairs
Take 48 each of patches F and G and sew into pairs. Press to darker fabric (patch G).

Next time in the 3rd Clue, we'll complete one of the blocks.
The 3rd Clue will be available at the August guild meeting! Join the fun!
